Quarter Sawn Wood

Quarter Sawing Lumber is a process in which logs are cut into quarters and then the boards are sawn at an angle away from the center of the log. This causes the growth rings or "grains to pass through the boards at a more perfect 90 degree angle.

quarter sawn oakQuarter-sawn wood takes more time and effort to cut and creates slightly more wasted log, hence the higher price. The benefits of quarter sawn boards have been know to Europeans for as many a 600 years.

So what are the benefits? Quarter sawn wood is not as prone to twist, warp or cup as it ages. This was very important in bygone days before modern wood treatment was an option. Quarter sawn also is stronger, holds a finish better and does not allow liquids to easily pass through it.

The finest heirloom furniture is made from quarter-sawn wood to ensure generations of durability.

 Mortise and Tenon Joinery

Used in demanding furniture and building construction, mortise and tenon joints are designed to withstand the shear stress and racking forces applied when opening a shutter.

This makes the mortise and tenon joint the ideal joint for our shutters.

 Reinforced Engineered Styles

Multiple layers of wood are bonded together to bolster the core of our styles, making for a more robust and hearty support system for your shutter.

Wood Preparation

" Prescription Wood Conditioning", our trademarked wood drying technique, dries the wood to emulate the environmental  conditions of where your shutters will be installed. This practice also reduces post-installation shrinking and swelling of your shutters.

 Multiple Finish

A labor-intensive hand finishing process that involves multiple sandings and coatings of stain or paint to achieve a translucent and polished finish.
